About a month and a half ago I posted a request for help with a bug in printer handling under 2.2.x of AIX. To summarize, when opening a printer, the open call always returns a file identifier, even if the printer isn't there. This was further complicated by the fact that the close of the printer would hang the process. IBM contacted me today to tell me that this problem is to be added to their permanent restriction list. That it is to large an engineering problem to be fixed. They did state that the problem is only with the parallel printer driver, and if you have your serial printers cabled properly this is not a problem.
