[comp.sys.ibm.pc.rt] vi via remote login

vlruo02@dutrun.UUCP (Ge van Geldorp) (05/02/89)

Hello,

We recently installed some RT's running AIX 2.2.1. The whole
installation went rather smoothly and we are pleased with the systems.
However, one small problem is driving me nuts.
When loggin in on the console, vi works just as it should. When logging
in from a remote system using the `rlogin' command (with the environment
variable TERM set to vt100) vi usually complains "Don't know enough about
your terminal to use visual" and puts me in ex. The strange thing is
that sometimes for no obvious reason to me vi doesn't complain and
performs ok.
The terminfo entry for the vt100 is in it's place, and when I set TERM
to vt100 on the console vi doesn't complain. The system I'm logging in
from is either a Ultrix or UTek system.
Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.

Ge van Geldorp.

This has hosed me too, for some reason only on my Xenix systems with Excelan
TCP/IP rlogin. If I rlogin from a BSD machine (SunOS or Ultrix) it doesn't
happen. Also, If I telnet instead of rlogin, I can use vi...
