[comp.sys.ibm.pc.rt] Re-install of OS has bugs.

peter@hydrovax.nmt.edu (Peter A. Blemel) (05/17/89)

I have a problem that I could use a little help on. We have 2 Rts , one
of which was running 1.1.something. The 2.2.1 install asks if you plan to
clobber everything and go from scratch (this *is* what I want to do), yet it
still checks the current active partitions on the disks. This is particulary
annoying because it wont let me repartition the minidisks with different
space allocations.

To be specific, I want more tmp , page, and usr space. None of f these
partitions can be deleted while AIX is running. When I add up all of the
default sizes that install gives they are well under the size of the disk,
yet I cant expand any of them to completely use the disk because the existing
/ /tmp and /usr partitions are added in when install computes the max size
it will allow the partition to be. I Did some fanagleing, but the best I
could do was to use all but 16 meg of the disk. This is not really big enough
for a seperate partition, and I *could* use the space on another (like page)
 partition.

Thanks
Peter

Use the AIX install/maint diskettes to delete all of the AIX
minidisks. I believe that you want Utility functions off of the main
menu. Then use the VRM minidisk to "Change Page Space Minidisk". You
can do it all from the VRM diskette, but it is not obvious.

Then do the install with the Install Maint diskette.

I've successfully moved /usr by creating a new partition, backing up
and restoring the data to the new partition, and then using the
Install/Maint diskettes, deleting the minidisks and reallocating them
in the exact same locations but with the opposite IODN numbers. But
you can't count this as "while AIX is running", since it has to be
done from install/maint.
