[comp.sys.ibm.pc.rt] RT Thin Ether Connection

bunda@cs.utexas.edu (John Bunda) (06/13/89)

I just got an RT Ethernet Adapter, and I believe I've got all the
software configured properly (including etc/hosts, etc/net (AIX 2.2.1)
entries, including 1500 length packets). Since the UB card has only the
thick-type connection, I tried connecting it with an HP ThinMAU,
but neither the net nor the RT seem happy with this arrangement -
the TCPIP startup gives me "009-005 Physical link control experienced an
unusual network condition", and meanwhile, the network is going crazy
with "ie0: packet received with XXX bit cleared" appearing on Suns.
This occurs even with the RT powered down (but all cabling connected).

Question: Should this work? Should I suspect a bad part (the thinMAU?)
or is this hopeless, and I should go dig up an IBM (logo) adapter box?

Thanks---

John

The problem was incorrect-impedence terminators. The HP ThinMAU works
fine. Thanks to those who replied.

Now that I am up and running, I have encountered some new problems,
though not too serious. rexec and friends give the syslogd daemon
some pain, the daemon sends messages "setuid:not owner" now and then.
I can send mail out, but incoming mail gets rejected:

one two three...

I've been over and over sendmail.cf and can't see anything
wrong with it. I've successfully configured sendmail in AIX
many times, but this is my first try in a mixed network.

Any suggestions? Thanks..

I considered this, but wound up buying 1-meter-long transceiver cables
and using transceivers I had on hand. The overall cost is a bit over
$200. per connection, quantity three. I'll get a slightly better price
the next time I buy some, from a different supplier.

Try getting one of TCL's thin wire trncievers. They list for about $200.
Sorry but I do not have TCL's address with me. They are in the Bay area
I think.
