From: Matthew Temple <temple%UMass-ECE@csnet-relay> In response to questions about the Password Modem: I've had mine now for about four months. It became erratic during the second month, and I'm please to say that the folks at USRobotics took back the old one, repaired it, and replaced it within 10 days. Although much of that time must have been taken up by UPS travel, I think that's a pretty good repair time. The modem has been working as advertised, but I haven't used it in any situation which might cause it to drop its line. I thought I might miss the TX

[Aren't you hungry...?] Once you get a working one, the Password modems are pretty good, but someone I know (a friendly professor) had to send his back three times for replacement before he finally found one that works. On the other hand, its basically a 1.5 chip item, so once it works it shouldn't stop... Even so, the time and hassle have a cost associated with them if you happen to get a lemon. Jon Shapiro

I've been using the 1200 baud PASSWORD modem for a few months now, and have yet to have a problem (reliability-wise). One oddness I've noticied is that if I try to dial-up to a system accross the country, the connection doesn't last very long. I loose carrier. I don't know if it's the modem or the lines between here and there, though. Any guesses? --Pete

We have a similar problem here. The data phone extensions have very carefully had all of the call-forwarding/extra features removed as they tend to cause the central office to hang up on the modem.
