[comp.sys.ibm.pc.rt] RT Boot Process & Streaming Tape Drive Questions

dkf@helios.iec.ufl.edu (Dan FitzPatrick) (09/24/89)

Two questions regarding a 6150 IBM RT PC running AOS 4.3:

     (1) During the boot process, the RT will display messages
that the file systems are already mounted. "df" will show them
to be mounted, but this is incorrect. This occurs 75% of the
time of all reboots. The solution to this point in time has
been to: a) "umount" and then "mount" the file systems, and then
proceed to start those processes that failed to start during the
regular boot process, or b) reboot until the system comes up
correctly.
This system functions as the primary nameserver for a variety
of unix-based computers. Unfortunately, the secondary nameserver
is a Sun 3/280 (SunOS 4.0.3) in which named does not work correctly
with YP. Thus, when the RT goes down (and it did during a power
glitch the morning after the console monitor went out :-{), the
whole network goes down, especially when it was apparent that the
autoboot was not proceeding as it should. Thus, until I can get
a fix for the secondary nameserver, I would like very much to get
the RT to function as it should.

     (2) The above system also came with a 6157-002 streaming tape
drive. The manual recommends 3M DC300XLP (450', 45MB) tapes and
a dump procedure as follows:

     % dump 0suf 2600 /dev/st0 <file system>
                 ----
Where do they get the 2600 from? The previous system administrator
I took over from (three weeks ago) recommended 3M 6150 (600', 150MB)
tapes. Obviously, the latter are much preferred. Does anyone know any
specifics about the 6157 streaming tape unit, i.e., number of tracks,
densities, etc., such that I can use the capabilities of the 3M 6150
tapes with dump? I have not been able to rdump at this time.
P.S. rdump on the RT does not specify a blocking factor. The only
half-inch drive I have available is on a HCX-9 system that has a default
blocking size of 10, whereas it is 20 on the RT. The difference in
blocking factors has caused problems doing remote backups on other
systems and so I have reason to believe it is the cause of such here.

I would appreciate any help or insight into these matters.
I still consider myself somewhat novice and do have my hands full.
If there is interest, I will post summaries to the net.

     Thanks in advance.
