[comp.sys.ibm.pc.rt] Stuck with an RT

sherman@ncifcrf.gov (Arthur Sherman) (10/11/89)

We are a small group of researchers who got a free (sic) RT several years
ago and want to make the best use of it for scientific computing and
visualization. We also want to use it as a print and file server for
our AT's and PS/2's running AIX.

Problem: We can't seem to do some very basic things that even our dumb
DOS machines can do.

1) Terminal emulation: When we telnet or rlogin as a vt100 to a non-AIX
machine (eg SUN or VMS VAX) vi doesn't work properly. For example, when
you type ^U the top line changes but not the rest of the screen; when you
delete a line, it is not deleted from the screen; etc.

2) Printing: We have an HP Laserjet connected via a serial port. Binary
files such as troff or Tex files generated by DOS machines, for example,
can be printed using print -plot, but we can not print simple text files
correctly -- the top line on each page is screwed up.

3) How can we get troff or LaTeX with printer drivers for the RT?

It goes without saying that IBM has not been much help, or we wouldn't
be taking up net resources for these basic questions. We have no full-time
system person to figure this stuff out -- we just want to use the machine
to the extent possible.
