I'm currently trying my best to do some useful work on an IBM rt running AIX 2.2.1. I am using X11 as distributed by IBM. The server has lots of bugs but one in particular is a real pain. When a menu is popped up over a window, it leaves a black background in its place when it disappears. I got the latest fixes for an IBM X server from uunet.uu.net, but I can't compile them because of bugs in the C compiler under AIX. Does anyone have an executable X11 IBM RT under AIX Server which I can simply FTP over the Internet? (I'm also having lots of problems compiling alloc.c in the gemacs distribution and if this nonsense continues I think I'll just go to AOS instead. Of course, I have access to an RT running AOS and I can't compile gemacs there either for the same reason! I'm trying the "hc" compiler now and it does the same thing. Maybe the rumored RT follow-on machines will be better. Please respond to me directly since I haven't managed to get usenet setup here yet. There are lots and lots of IBM fixes to X11 on AIX 2.2.1, not to mention the fixes to GSL that cause the X server to get re-linked. The bug you mention is not a familiar one; I suspect that you have a very out-of-date X11. Take a look in /usr/lpp/X11/lpp.hist. It should say something like: a X11 02.01.0260 290989 root Version 2.1 1727 * c X11 02.01.0260 290989 root * ~ although this might also be somewhat backlevel. The gsl (/usr/lpp/gsl) lpp.hist file should say something like: a gsl 02.06.0050 030789 root Version 2.2.1 1742 * c gsl 02.06.0050 030789 root * The above entries are only mention the latest fixes applied. There are lots of others ( but the latest will include them if necessary ). Pick up the current batch of fixes from your IBM rep. The MIT AIX server code WILL NOT WORK - do not try to use it. I don't think you can compile it anyway. On the other hand, most of the non-server stuff can be made to work with AIX. I got the current Xw (hp widgets) source from expo.lcs.mit.edu a few weeks ago and it's working quite well ( I needed it to run the samples from Youngs excellent book ). There are still some wierd problems with fonts; I had the MIT fonts working, but lost them through a stupid user error that trashed a lot of files. Now I can't figure out how to get them back and working. -- Ed Clarke acheron!clarke
