[comp.sys.ibm.pc.rt] Can you explain the "loopback" I see on ethernet

jon@jonlab.UUCP (Jon LaBadie) (11/20/89)

I'm attempting to set up an ethernet "network" using the baseband
adapter on two Model 125's (big network) running AIX 2.2.1.

After some initial hardware problems, the diagnostics report no
problems but I get VERY strange behavior (at least to me it is strange).

Both systems are able to "ping" themselves and the other system. Thus,
our first thoughts were "we got it right!".

We tried to do remote logins (telnet) and seemed to have succeded. But
to our dismay, we found out that our "remote" logins were actually login
prompts from the local system despite what the messages were telling us

As a final sanity check, we disconnected the coax between the two
machines. Yup, you guessed it, we could still "ping" the other system
and "remote login" to it.

Can anyone explain these symptoms to me?
