[comp.sys.ibm.pc.rt] System wide .login on RT running AIX 2.2.1

ron@woan.austin.ibm.com (Ronald S. Woan) (12/22/89)

Some people seem to have misinterpreted my reply. I did not intend to
say that /bin/csh should execute /etc/profile or ~/.profile. Boy do
people think that I am that stupid, coming from Berkeley and using
/bin/csh most of my natural life. The only real question was whether in
the init process those files were executed (which they are not) as the
/etc/environment is used to provide global environment setting by default.

The correct solution to the jolly dilemma is for the system
administrator to setup default ~/.cshrc and ~/.login files when the
account is initially setup, like the ~/.profile which is setup by
default in the out of the box AIX2.2.1. Since /bin/csh doesn't come
with the base AIX system, I guess they didn't feel it necessary to
document it in the system management manual nor create ~/.cshrc and
~/.login files automatically. /bin/ksh (for those of you who have it)
does execute /etc/profile and ~/.profile when logged in though.
