[comp.sys.ibm.pc.rt] Problems installing a second disk on a RT running 4.3

ANKGC@CUNYVM (Anil Khullar) (02/08/90)

Hi everybody,

I am having trouble installing a second 310 M hard disk (A MAXTOR drive
which I removed from a PS2/80) on a RT 6150. It
has an ESDI adapter and is running ACIS/4.3. The machine currently has
a 310M disk in drive C.

After I installed the second disk on drive D the diagnostics does not show
the second at all. On the other hand when I boot the machine the following
message appears on the console.

Feb 7 18:55:39 eleni vmunix: hdc0: card level 0x4b microcode level 0x55 c
onfiguration bits 0xc3
Feb 7 18:55:39 eleni vmunix: hdc0 adapter f00001f0 IRQ 12 CPU level 4

Feb 7 18:55:39 eleni vmunix: hd1 at hdc0 slave 1
Feb 7 18:55:39 eleni vmunix: HD: adapter @ 0xf00001f0 TIMED OUT (0x51 & 0

Feb 7 18:55:39 eleni vmunix: hd1: bad/missing configuration record
Feb 7 18:55:39 eleni vmunix: HD: adapter @ 0xf00001f0 TIMED OUT (0x51 & 0
x88 != 0x8)

I tried formating the disk but it refuses to do any type of formatting.
The disk is brand new disk that I kludged from a PS2 model 80.
What am I doing wrong ? I have checked all the manuals and could not
find any clue as to what could have gone wrong.

Has anybody ever faced such a trouble before ? It seems surprising that
this drive is the same model as the first drive (company, type, etc...)
I am willing to try any suggestions that some has to offer, short of saying
forget-it !!!.

  Thanks in advance.

Maxtor XT-4380 E hard disk (as well as all other ibm esdi-drives) has
a certain configuration block written on disk. This configuration
block (sector) contains such information as : No of bytes per sector,
no of heads, no of cylinders, no of sectors per track etc ... and
ASCII text 'IBM HARDFILE TYPE XXX' and type number in hexadecimal.

So you are not able to change RT and PS drives even if they look like
the same. Sorry.

BTW the configuration block is written on physical track 0, physical
head 0 and sector 2 ....

No, you're wrong. The format command on the "sautil" diskette
will gladly write another configuration record if one does not exist.

There seems to be another problem during the format process
because I've had no success trying to format two different
Maxtor 4380E ESDI drives on two different RTs with the EESDI
adaptor.

If you can attach the drive to an RT and get a copy of the VRM Installation
Diskettes (normally used with AIX) you can probably fix the disk.

Put the diskette in the floppy drive, the power up the RT. Select
the option to enter the Maintenance Facility. The(You may be asked
to choose a keyboard language first, but don't worry -- you'll quit
without installing a VRM. Then choose the format
disk option. (? get's help). This utility will enable you to rewrite
the configuration record, then format the disk. You can pick
the format from several canned configurations. Make sure you have a new
VRM diskette that supports the 310M drive. Good luck -- I've only done
this with 70M disks.
