[comp.sys.ibm.pc.rt] Help - need help to get an RT up and running

enjvr@sunc.UUCP (Jayant V. Ragde) (03/03/90)

I am trying to get an RT (Model 10) up and running and
would like to get some help.

This system was configured earlier and I did not get any information
about its prior configuration. I got this system without any graphics
adaptor and would like to bring up the system using maybe a Hercules
compatible clone and a monochrome monitor to start with. When I try
to do this there is absolutely no display - shortly after power-up as
it goes through its power-up diagnostics (?) the screen is written to
and cleared and then after that nothing.

I would appreciate any pointers on getting this system up and running
and yes I have an old version of AIX (v1.01 I believe).

Thanks in advance for any help.

The model 10 is ancient as is the level of AIX that you're using.
There's no support for Hercules type graphics. The cheapest non
graphics card that you can use is an IBM monochrome card ( or a
clone ). I don't think [ but I'm not sure ] that an EGA equivalent
is supported either [ I never had one to work with ].

As for USING such a card, that's not a problem - as long as you write
your own code to drive it and don't try to use it as a system console.
You can get at ports and bus memory via /dev/bus using ioctl.
