Thanks to all who offered help for my problem installing VRM 2.2.1 . I tried responding to several of you individually, but I don't know if my mail reached you. [ chris@hudson.cs.columbia.edu ] [ njs@scifi.UUCP (Nicholas J. Simicich) ] [ John Garnett <garnett%a.cs.okstate.edu@RELAY.CS.NET> ] [ moody@moody..austin.ibm.com ] I used James Moody's instructions, as follows (THANKS!): Boot the machine. Hit ctl-alt-numpad4 (only works if you have some display connected to the RT that is not the megapel). You are now in the VRM debugger. At the prompt, do the following: >al F0008828 F0 [enter] >g [enter] You should be back in AIX now. Shutdown and reboot from diskette. -------------------------------------------------- Now that I have AIX 2.2.1 installed, I am having trouble reaching the network. I have an ethernet connection to a local (U of Minn - Duluth) network. My RT's internet address is 131.212.32.10 . I can telnet and ftp out to the local network, but not to off-campus sites (e.g., not to 128.101.16.3 sc.msc.umn.edu ). I do receive mail on the RT from campus machines, but apparently not from off-campus machines. (The mail address I've given below is on another campus computer.) I cannot telnet into the RT ("rtchem.d.umn.edu") from even the campus network. I can't start telnetd - error message is below. I have an old (1986) tcp/ip manual, but didn't find much helpful in it. I have asked my local IBM office to order a new tcpip manual for me, but that's likely to take a few months. I would appreciate suggestions. Below are three commands that ran when I had AIX 2.2 installed, but now fail. I am using the old /etc/hosts file. I enter:/usr/lpp/tcpip/etc/telnetd & response:/usr/lpp/tcpip/etc/telnetd: getpeername: No such device I enter:route add 128.0.0.0 ags 1 response:add net 128.0.0.0: gateway : Network is unreachable I enter:telnet (or telnet -e vt100) (Of course, it was "tn" in AIX2.2) response:Can't emulate a 3270 terminal on a vt100 terminal response: telnet> Then the terminal stops echoing characters and the rt stops responding to things I type, except that ^c does get me a new prompt. Note: I have set EMULATE=vt100 . Ideas? What does the "getpeername" message refer to? I have tried what I found in chapters 7 and 8 of the "Managing the AIX Op Sys" manual. I also looked around in /usr/lpp/tcpip/samples and tried customizing named.boot there: ( domain 10.32.212.131 ) but I didn't know what I was doing with named.boot, and the resulting named.rev and named.data files don't look good: setting default domain to ... "." . Thanks for your help.
