[comp.sys.ibm.pc.rt] Problems with 6152 X-terminal software

eap@bu-pub.bu.edu (Eric Pearce) (10/04/90)

I installed the "convert your 6152 into an X-terminal" software
 without too much effort, but...

when I type "x" in DOS, it starts booting and craps out durring the
autoconfig (as far as I can tell - it flashed off the screen pretty
 quickly)

 panic: startup buffers

 Any ideas?

This is as good a time as any to bring it up... has anyone else brought up
X11R4 on the 6152? I ftp'd the distribution from expo and built it on our
RT 125, setting appropriate options and specifying a build for apa16 and vga
displays. It works, pretty much. However, there are times when it
misbehaves. For example, I may be using xeyes and it will leave trailing
eyeball bits. This is using the X11R4 distributed xeyes and server. This
isn't a serious problem and I haven't personally noticed any readily
reproducible bugs. However, our department has talked to a couple of other
sites, and I've heard complaints that the server WILL lock when using
Andrew on a fairly regular basis. One systems person mentioned that he had
traced it to the server, and that there was a fairly large loop through
several major server routines in which the server would get locked.

Is anyone running Andrew on the 6152 under X11R4? Any horror stories? I'm
hesitant to recommend installing something which is known to be crashable.
On the positive side, the 6152 Xserver is a hell of a lot more reliable than
the piece of trash that IBM supplied with our RS/6000. ;-)

Any comments appreciated.

... Joe

I've had a couple of problem reports with the 6152 X-server package,
which may be display related, or 3rd-party related (e.g. AFS 3-or-later),
or with the kernel build. For everyone's information, I was asked to
not include the kernel binary in the kit - this to avoid potential binary
redistribution concerns by AT&T - so you had to build some crucial part
yourself. In spite of the "X11.r2-only support", we do want you to use
later versions if you choose to (after all, in quality terms, r2 << r3 < r4),
and so the 6152 X-server kit was intended to allow you to make your own
selection. This may be a contributing factor.

I'd like to get this resolved so send me your problems, with as much detail
as you can. Thanks in advance to Joe Greco (Wisconsin at Milwaukee), Lowell
Schulmen (IBM at CUNY), and of course, Bill Webb (IBM at Palo Alto), who
created the package.
