We have a contract with IBM to provide CIM courses using
hardware donated to the college. The hub of this program is
a AS400. This entire program is run by an instructor. (My
office has been hands-off until a week ago. We do all of our
development on VAXes.)
A couple of weeks ago IBM came to us and told us that they
want to donate 12 RT's. One RT server and 11 others on a
token ring network. I need to know some information about
the equipment they are offering to donate. There are costs
involved with the donation and the administrators involved
want our input so they may determine if the costs are worth
it. The costs involve $3000.00 to join a software consortium
and $200.00 per machine for UNIX licences to ATT.
I need to know the following:
What software is available to run on the RT?
Do you use the RT?
* If so, what applications do you have running on it?
Can these machines be configured to run DOS applications?
* Would this require additional hardware?
* What software is available to do this?
Can the hardware be used in other machines?
* Can the monitor be used on PC's?
* Can the hard disks be used in PC's?
* What kind of controllers does the RT use?
Any colleges out there offering instructional programs on RT's?
* If so, what packages do you run?
One option that has been discussed is to teach UNIX and C.
* Any opinions on the viability of such a program?
