Okay folks, I said I would check into who has pc implementations of TCP/IP avaiable for PC's and summarize to the net. First off a definition or two. vendor- I mean anyone who produces a software package that is available to "people". people- Someone who can get a software package from a "vendor". Some software may only be available to educational or non-govenmetal, or non-commercial or whatever institutions. Check the summarized vendors guide after the summary . Commercial- Software writtten by anybody available to "people" that costs any amount of money. PD- Software written by anybody that is available to "people" that doesn't cost money. Well here it is. What I have done it started with the vendors guide from sri-nic and VERY briefly summarized it. I have weeded out all non-msdos products from this list. I have taken the essential data from each listing in the vendors list and paraphrased it. I tried to keep what I said as close as possible to what the vendor said. After I made the first pass through the list I gave anyone who responded to my request for info on this mailing list a chance to elaborate on what is listed here. I have tried to be fair with this list. Many of the entries in the vendors guide are out of date (do you hear that vendors/distributors?). I also noticed a few products that I am personally familiar with that were not listed in the vendors guide (most notably Sun's PCNFS and NCSA's NCSA Telnet). I mentioned to these people that perhaps they should get themselves listed in the vendors guide. I also gave them the chance to send me info to include. If anyone has any problems with what I said about their product/package let me know and I will try to correct the error. If there is interest I will update this list from time to time. The format of the list is: Vendor Product (Commercial/PD) Description of product. NOTE: A package is "Commercial" if it costs money, it is PD if it is free. PD packages may or may not have restrictions on them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Beame BWTEL/BWKTEL, BWSERTH (Commercial) vt100/vt52 Telnet, serial emulator that allows redirection of serial data to network. Spartacus/Fibronics KNET TCP/PC actually supports all the same TCP/IP functions as FTP Software's PC/TCP, except they don't do SLIP. I'll remind them to update their entry. Same with Proteon's MS-DOS TCP/IP. Other vendors of TCP/IP for the PC include ACC, cisco Systems, MICOM-Interlan, Sytek, Univation, and Unipress in the U.S., and BICC Data Networks, Spider Systems, and Schneider & Koch GmBh overseas. All of these have more or less the same features as FTP's PC/TCP. IBM sells a package, too, which has MIT & CMU ancestry. I believe it includes H19 and 3270 emulating telnets, an FTP client, POP, TFTP and maybe another program or two. James B. VanBokkelen FTP Software Inc.
