[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Ethernet software options

amlovell@phoenix.Princeton.EDU (Anthony M Lovell) (04/14/88)

We are going to get another Ethernet connection (an IBM XT).

Our other machine (similar) uses FTP software's PC/TCP package of
software. We use it by rote. We need some basic info to determine if
it is reasonable to get another package of software for the second node.
We want to know if there exists a TEK 4010 emulation program which can
access Ethernet. What are one's options in software for Ethernet
access? Can any communications package handle the connection? (we have
EM4010, a TEK4010 emulator which works over a com port at rates up to
9600 baud [maybe more]) Is it likely that this can be used?

I guess the basic question is: Does Ethernet come in thru a comport?

Please pardon me if these questions are "simple" or if I've left out
necessary details.

Ethernet has its own separate hardware, and it's not supported by MS-DOS or
BIOS at all. It doesn't look at all like a serial port (COM1 or whatever)
to the PC.

FTP Software's PC/TCP has a special version of telnet, glass telnet, that
was designed to help with the problem of using different terminal emulators.
Glass telnet just passes everything through to the DOS stdout device
when it gets data from the net, rather than trying to emulate a terminal
itself. So if you can convince DOS to emulate a terminal on stdout, then
glass telnet will emulate that same terminal since it's not doing any
of the work itself.

An easy terminal to emulate is an ANSI terminal; install ANSI.SYS in your
\CONFIG.SYS file and then glass telnet will act like an ANSI terminal.
So you'll have to have a special TEK4010 emulator that can install itself
as the DOS console device. The one particular emulator that I know of,
and which I know works with PC/TCP because people are using it, is
a package sold by Grafpoint, but I don't know their address or phone
number or where they're located...

Beame & Whiteside Software has a Tektronics 4105 emulator which runs Telnet
TCP/IP. The 4105 also includes the Tek 4010/4014 subset of commands.

This product is called TNET. The company's address and phone are

      Grafpoint
      1485 Saratoga Ave.
      San Jose, CA 95129

      (408) 446-1919

We haven't used the product yet, so I can't comment on how good
it is.

I believe that Microplot in Ohio has a TEK driver which may work with
FTP's glass TELNET mode. They're at 659-H Park Meadow Road, Westerville, OH
43081. Phone (614) 882-4786.

Note that I haven't tried anything like this. I have used Microplot's
PC-Plot III serial TEK emulator.
