Does anyone know if the source for the MIT 'Netwatch' program is available on any BITNET file server. Any information on the availability of the source code would be appreciated. Regards, Bernie Murphy Bell-Northern Research Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Netwatch is part of PC/IP. You may still be able to get it from: MIT Microcomputer Center Room 11-209 77 Massachusetts Avenue Cambridge, MA 02139 (617) 253-6325 The CMU version, which compiles with Microsoft C instead of the Unix-based cross-compiler, is also available via anonymous FTP and from a BITNET host, but I always forget the details of this. Source should be included with it. No work has been done on it in a few years and it's unlikely any will happen. FTP Software sells a much-enhanced, commercial version of it, which is unlikely to be easy to get source for. - john -------

The latest newsletter I have from FTP Software is dated 7/87 and has a code of PA-0005A. It says In addition to single machine binary licenses, source licenses, vendor agreements and siter licenses are also available. A Development Kit for network application software is also available... The price list from 4/88 has "PC/TCP Development Environment (for Microsoft C 4.0) at $500 in two versions, having libraries for use with two different versions of the software. The address is FTP Software, Inc. PO Box 150 Kendall Sq. Branch Boston, MA 02142 (617) 868-4878 Hope this may be of use, Bob Wilson

Source should be included with it. It is no longer available from BITNET. There were too many problems with BITNET distributions such as upstream nodes complaining about the amount of traffic. The CMU distribution is only available from the arpanet and by mail from the Austin Code Works. Drew

Sorry, but our basic Developer's Kit is oriented towards people who want to write applications that use TCP, UDP, etc. It doesn't really help if what you want to do is monitor networks. We do sell a network monitor, LANWatch, which is derived from the MIT Netwatch. It comes with source for the filtering, packet parsing and packet display routines, with the intention that users be able to add their own support for types we don't understand (either we haven't gotten to them, or they are sufficiently unique that we probably won't do them ourselves). Some people who want to modifiy Netwatch might find this to be an adequate substitute... James VanBokkelen FTP Software Inc.
