Boy, is my face red! In my previous posting (request for information), I
completely messed up by asking about FTP instead of TCP/IP (I'm drowing
in a sea of acronyms!). My apologies (no wonder some of the responses looked
so strange!), and here is the *correct* request. Thanks to everyone who
responded, and any further information based on this request would be
appreciated (now I'm going to hide under a rock somewhere to hide
my embarrasement...)

Dear Net-
I'm sure that this query has gone out before, so I apologize in advance
if this is the umpteenth time you've seen it. We have many AT clones that
are currently networked together using the IBM PC Network (ick). We want
to change our configuration to more extensible in light of a change in
machine types. In particular, we want to be able to have PC's, SUN's,
Macintoshes, and VAX's to be able to talk to each other. TCP seems to be
a protocol common to each, so we'd like to start out by having our PC's
talk to each other using TCP. Here are some particular questions:
(1) What TCP implementations are available for PC/AT/'386 machines? I've
seen the "Pc/Ip" scorecard, but am at somewhat of a loss to
interpret it.
(2) What do these implementations provide in terms of sharing files on
different machines (i.e., providing a file server)?
(3) What cards are good/bad for TCP? We're heading towards using ethernet...
are there any known shortcomings as far as it is concerned?
(4) Are there any known gateways that will connect machines on a IBM PC
Network and TCP-based network so that they can all talk to each other
(Novell alleges to do this... anyone have any experience with them?)
(5) How does Pc/Ip relate to TCP/IP?
Responses from *anyone* who has had experience in a similiar
situation or who has any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated.
In particular, we're looking for a short-term solution to have some
machines on an ethernet with some sort of ethernet cards talk to
machines on the IBM PC Network (all machines are AT clones at the
moment).
