[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] TCP/IP Problem

hlison@bbn.com (Herb Lison) (06/15/88)

I've written a client/server application using SUN's PC-NFS toolkit. In
testing the TCP/IP throughput between a SUN workstation and an IBM-PC/AT
I occasionally very long transmission times for individual packets, some
as long as 50 or 60 seconds. When I perform the same test on an IBM-PC/XT,
using the same Ethernet card (WD8003E), on the same Ethernet segment, this
behavior is not apparent, although the average throughput is somewhat less.
Both systems are nearly identically configured. The AT has some extra
hardware which is not in use during the tests. Neither uses DMA for the
Ethernet boards, which are both set to use IRQ 3. Anybody know if the AT
has any characteristic which might explain this odd behavior? Thanks in
advance.
