[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Do the 3Com supplied 3C523 diagnostics work?

aries@water.waterloo.edu (Peter Bumbulis) (06/21/88)

I'm trying to install a 3C523 in a PS/2 model 80 but the boards keep failing the
3Com diagnostics. (The diagnostics indicate that the boards either have bad RAM
or associated circuitry.) The machines have been configured for the 3C523 with
no conflicts (the 3Com diagnostics idea of the configuration matches that of
IBM's configuration program) and a loopback plug was attached. The 3C523 was
configured for external transciever. (The error occurs on the first group 1
test so according to the diagnostics the presence or absence of a loopback plug
shouldn't be a factor.)

I've tried 2 different 3C523 boards in 2 different machines (a PS/2 model 60
and 80) with the same results. (The 3C523 was the only board in the machines
besides the hard disk controllers. I've installed other network boards
(baseband, token ring) in both machines successfully.) Changing the memory
and i/o addresses using the configuration program didn't have any effect either.

The networking software that is supposed to use this board hasn't arrived yet,
so I don't know for sure whether the boards actually work or not. Is there
anything obvious that I could have missed in setting up the boards? Do the
3Com supplied diagnostics work (The diagnostics and .ADF file used were the ones
supplied on a diskette with the board)? Should I try yet another board?
Thanks in advance,

Peter
