[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Flavors of POP

ULTIMA@UNC.BITNET (Paul Jones) (08/02/88)

We, at UNC ACS, have purchased Stanford's SU Mac/Ip. We love the FTP
interface and the telnet features, but we've got trouble with POP. As I
understand it there are three (3) flavors of POP (POP, revised POP, and
POP2). IBM and SUN have offered a free POP2 server (both of which we
have) that runs as a daemon. SU Mac/Ip however does not speak POP2, but
"revised POP". I understand that Rand Mail Handler from Irvine talks
"revised POP" but our CS department would rather not install such a big
chunk of code as MH (no matter how wonderful it may be) when a amall
daemon will do the job. Does anyone know: 1) the RFC numbers of the
various POPs, 2) where a "revised POP" daemon might be found, 3) a way
to extract the "revised POP" portion of MH and run it as a daemon. 4) If
Stanford plans to ever support POP2. If we can at least get the RFC we
can probably hack the POP2 daemon to speak "revised POP".
Thanks for all comments (in advance of course)..
