[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] OS/2 Lan Man won't boot!

snorthc@NSWC-G.ARPA (09/12/88)

Please help me. I am unable to bring the OS/2 Lan Manager supplied
with the MS SDK up except in loop back mode. I have currently installed
a 3COM 3C505 Rev I setup for INT 5, DMA 5, 300H I/O. I have tried other
settings as well. I have tried Locator and no Locator. I currently
have the OS/2 SDK installed on an IBM AT with 100% IBM parts except for
the ethernet card. I also tried a Compaq386.

The computer hangs while trying to execute the config.sys. The last
line printed on the screen is from the Sequenced Packet Protocol driver
version 3.0.1.

I have called 3Com several times a day for several days,
usually for the thrill of listening to a recorded message.

Question 2. If I do get this software to boot, will I be able to
interoperate with FTP SW NetBIOS/TCP? How about Excelan or Bridge's
implementation?

Even beta code should boot!

I can't say why 3Com's stuff fails, but as far as I know, even once it
starts to work, it uses an XNS-based encapsulation for the SMB packets,
which won't interoperate with RFC-conforming NETBIOS-over-TCP/IP (FTP S/W,
Bridge, Excelan, et al).
