[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] looking for PC Ethernet cards and SW

jesper@freja.dk (Jesper L. Lauritsen) (11/03/88)

Hi Netlanders!

We are currently installing an Ethernet LAN, and would like to hear about
your experience with PC cards and software. We have to select cards and
software for a larger number of XT AT and PS/2 DOS based machines.
We have the following demands and wishes for cards and software:
- Full TCP/IP with ARP etc.
- Telnet, Ftp and preferable R-utillities. Capable of several concurrent
  sessions.
- Preferable able to use Domaine Name Server.
- Some way to use DOS file and print server. This may be Novell, 3Com,
MS-Networks or something alike. (This may be third part software.)
- Preferable Netbios interface.
- Preferable able to use Xenix file server.
- Nice if able to use NFS.
- VT100 and 3270 terminal emulation via telnet, and preferable also VT100 via
rlogin. (This may be third part software.) Terminal emulator preferable
able to run in seperate DESQview or Windows.
- Nice if 3279 3G grafik terminal emulation (some way or another - this may be
  third part software.)
- Nice if able to boot PC from the net.
- Capable of mapping national 7 bit character sets to PC 8 bit character sets.
- Resident part should use little of DOS 640K ram - preferable (much) less
  than 100K.
- High performance.
- Low price (this is of course somewhat in contradiction with the demands
above - we know that we have to pay to get what we want)
Current contenders are Exelan, Ungermann-Bass, 3Com, BICC/Isolan and Bridge.

What are your experience with these or any other cards/software? Are our
demands and wishes relevant and realistic?

We appreciate your help, and will of course summarize to the net.
