[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] In search of a NETBIOS

jbvb@VAX.FTP.COM (James Van Bokkelen) (11/10/88)

RFC1001/1002 specify how NETBIOS operations map to TCP/IP operations.
Because of this, any program that just sits on top of the Int 5C and
tests things is incomplete. It may do a good job of determining just
how well the Int 5C calls correspond to one of the competing standards
for "NetBIOS", but it won't test the TCP/IP layer conformance.

Given that all current implementations of RFC1001/1002 are subsets
(no p- or m-nodes, as far as I know, and not many people tried to do
"retarget"), what would probably be most useful is to collect all of
the extant implementations and set them talking to one another, using
various Int 5C exercisers. Then, sit back with a network monitor and
watch for glitches. As far as I know, there is no commercial test suite
for all layers in this situation.

Dear Mr. Bokkelen,

this message is not a response to your request. I'm using this way in order
to reach your company which I know has good TCP/IP products for PCs.
Please ack this message and either pass it to a marketing person in your
company or tell me how can I reach him. If your policy precludes the
use of e-mail for such things, you find below fax, telex and phone numbers.

The interest around TCP/IP is growing very much here in Italy. My institute,
a branch of the National Research Council (a governmental institution),
has a satellite link with Arpanet and a national backbone carrying tcp/ip
as well as other protocol suites will be in place at the end of the next
year.
I'm the person who is in charge of defining the network architecture
and I often receive requests about tcp/ip products for PCs.
I use some of them and I'm not satisfied about them. I know that
your company has good products and I would like to get technical
information and a offer. I would also like, if possible, to get
a test copy of the product in order to evaluate it.

Could you please contact me?
