[net.micro] Is the HP Thinkjet Printer any good?

I am looking for pro/con information on the HP Thinkjet printer.
Have you had any problems? Clogged jets? Unsatisfactory copy?
Unavailable supplies (paper, ink)? Is it mechanically sound? Would
you buy it again? Is it quiet enough to be in an office?

Please mail replies to me and I will summarize for the net.

The only word I got is that they are selling well, and that supplies
are hard to come by do to slow production. Delivery is about 10
weeks, they say.

I have a thinkjet on my HP150, and my father just bought an IBMPC with
a thinkjet "off the shelf" (in Tulsa, OK at a "value added" (full
price) computer store (microAge)). I really like it - print quality
if pretty as long as you use inkjet paper (same price as normal paper,
allegedly), and it is remarkably quiet compared to any impact printers
I have seen. the Parallel and HP-IL version of the print have an
EPSON MX80 compatability mode, although my H{IB printer seems to lack
(at least documentation for) this printer.

The HPIB Thinkjet seems to be the HPIL Thinkjet with the battery
removed, and a HPIB to HPIL converter circuit added, so anything
available on the HPIL should be available on the HPIB version.

HP is not responsible for anything I say here. In fact, it may have
been generated by a noisy telephone line.

I recently handled the purchase of 30 ThinkJets
for my Division's use with HP 2392a CRTs. The printer
is really compact, prints clearly, but the micro-holes in
the inkjet cartridge have a tendency to dry up now and then,
producing poor print quality. A wipe with a damp cloth fixes this.
(We had two exceptions -- we had to replace the ink cartridge for
$8 each.) You can turn on boldface with a control sequence to
greatly improve the quality of print. Normal mode is also
very clear.

You'll need to stock special ThinkJet paper.
Also, buy one of those acrylic printer stands from HP to stock
a ream of paper under the printer.

All of us are quite pleased with the printers.

If you're going to use that much paper, I'd suggest contacting
a good paper supplier for a generic substitute; HP doesn't make
paper, so why pay for the HP logo on the box. Ditto the printer
stand. You can get them a lot of places, a lot cheaper, without
the HP logo.
