[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] CCMAIL / SMTP mail translator available

acm@RELAY.PROTEON.COM (01/28/89)

Folks,
I have been working with FTP and CCMAIL for about 2 years to develop a
translation system to make mail transparent between these two mail systems.
I currently have a system working with the following characteristics.

It does bi-directional mail translation. It allows Ccmail users to address
mail to the Arpanet or other supported networks without need to have
individual entries for each destination. It works quite well for replies
provided that the Arpanet names are not too long. It is currently lacking
a mechanism to queue unsuccessful outgoing mail for later delivery if the
Arpanet connection can not be reached. It does not have any aliassing
mechanism. Both these will be worked on in the future.

The system requires the CCMAIL gateway or dialin programs and the
import/export utilities to operate. This machine I call the postoffice
which does all the translation. It is an IBM PC or clone and runs DOS 3.3
or better. This machine needs to have the ability to support tcp/ip
protocols and (in my case) Novell protocols. This may be different pc
network protocols if you need. It has been made to work with 3-Com 3-plus
and SMTP. A second PC is required to handle incoming mail and is dedicated
to receiving and placing it on the PC network file system. Proteon is
currently using it for email communications in a world-wide network CCMAIL
system.

The software and some tools along with a detailed description are available
via anonymous FTP from Monk.Proteon.com (128.185.123.16). You must cd to
pub and you will find the following files:

     arpagw.arc the full stuff arc'd
arpagw.exe the full stuff arc'd with self dearciving
gwdesc the description file (ASCII) included above

All I ask is that you keep me informed of any use of the programs as
starting points for more development or direct use and that you allow me to
use you for a reference if and when you get it running. Otherwise the
software translator is written in TurboC (has been compiled under Microsoft
5.0 too) and should be reasonable to understand. I am making it available
so that email communications will be easier for the users that need to
support more than one system.
