Thanks to all who took the time to inform me that ARPing oneself is the mechanism to ensure unique IP address on same LAN. This certainly sounds a good solution to the specific case of IP on the same LAN. I suppose the general solution to ensure unique address in non-IP environment over multiple LANs haven't been solved yet.
