Recently, both Tim Krauskopf at NCSA and Russ Nelson at Clarkson University posted a list of public domain drivers conforming to the FTP packet driver specification available at each of their sites. With the advent of a growing base of public domain drivers it now makes sense for Wollongong to support the packet driver specification. I propose that a clearing house for public domain packet drivers be created. It would allow for the easy dissemination of new drivers via anonymous ftp and for each contributing organization to support a greater variety of interfaces in their own distributions. In his posting Russ Nelson had offered to distribute any packet driver sent to Clarkson; I would imagine that he would be interested in maintaining such a clearing house. If not, it could be set up at Wollongong. As Wollongong's contribution to this clearing house, we will put in the public domain each of our drivers as they are converted to conform to the packet driver specification. This list currently includes 3Com's 3c500, 3c503, 3c505 and 3c523, MICOM's NI5010, Western Digital's WD8003, Proteon's P1300, the BICC4110, a SLIP interface, and our IP over NetBIOS and IP over IPX interfaces. leo j mclaughlin iii The Wollongong Group ljm@twg.com

Perhaps you meant to call them "Freely copyable". I don't have any
public domain drivers -- they're all copyrighted. The header and
trailer parts of all the drivers is copyrighted by myself, so I hold
an interest in all of the packet drivers that I distribute. However,
the following people are responsible for their own copyrights:
3c501 - Phil Karn (bellcore)
3c503 - Bob Clements (bbn)
NI5010 - Bill Doster (umich)
NI5210 - Tim Krauskopf (uiuc's ncsa)
SLIP8250 - Phil Karn (bellcore)
wd8003e - Bob Clements (bbn)
To my knowledge, Bob Clements is the only person who has actually written any
packet driver code. I have transferred the copyrights from existing code
(C and ASM) written by the other three people to the packet drivers.

Sounds good to me. How about using sun.soe.clarkson.edu as the repository?
We already run an archive server from which the drivers are available for
those people who cannot FTP.

Great! However, I suggest that you retain a copyright, giving the
same permissions as the existing drivers. This will retain your name on
the drivers, giving you credit and "free" advertising.
