[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] inquiry on ps/2 mod 80 to ethernet

geer@ATHENA.MIT.EDU (03/10/89)

ddp@andrew.cmu.edu suggests that I inquire here about
getting a PS/2 model 80 (DOS) onto the (Ether)net.

Please advise as to what products or services you offer
in this regard.

We just hooked three model 70's (DOS) to an Ethernet. We used IBM's
TCP/IP software. The only card which this software supports on a
microchannel machine is the Ungermann-Bass NICps/2 card. This card
in turn connects only to a thick wire Ethernet, and ours is thinwire.
We had to use DESTA's from Digital to convert a thickwire tranceiver
cable to a thinwire connector. It all seems to work fine. I think
some other TCP/IP implementations support a much broader set of cards
than does IBM's for microchannel machines.

DOS TCP/IP vendors I know to support Microchannel cards are:

FTP Software: W-D WD8003/A, InterLAN NI9210, 3Com 3C523, Proteon P1800 with
direct drivers, IBM Token Ring Adapter/A and Ethernet cards from Gateway,
IMC Networks and Schneider & Koch via vendor-supplied software drivers.

IBM: U-B NIC/PS2 (which they resell under their own name as well).

Sun: 3Com 3C523 that I'm sure of, maybe others.

The Wollongong Group: 3Com 3C523 that I'm sure of, maybe others.

In addition, it might be worthwhile to ask Excelan, CMC, U-B and InterLAN if
they have Microchannel versions of their intelligent boards.
