[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] NCSA 2.2 ftp & Sony NEWS

deanr@lakesys.UUCP (Dean Roth) (03/14/89)

I need some help with NCSA's 2.2 ftp.

The hardware and software:
	10MHz 286 PC (28ms disk) with NCSA's 2.2 ftp
	with MICOM NI5210 Ethernet board

	Sony NEWS (68020) with 4.2BSD

The problem:
When sending a file (binary mode, have not tried
ascii mode) from the PC using NCSA's ftp to the
Sony NEWS, the PC sends a few blocks, then the
transfer stops for a long time, and finally a few
more blocks are transferred and the cycle repeats.
(I can see the "dead" times by watching the transceiver's
	status lights.)

A 131072 bytes file takes 35-50 seconds to send.
BUT the PC will receive the same file from the NEWS
	in 2 seconds!

Also, the NEWS can exchange the same file with a
Sun in 1.5 seconds, and the PC with NCSA's ftp will
exchange (send and receive) the file with the Sun
	in 2 seconds.

So, why does the NEWS and NCSA's ftp balk talking to
each other? Any ideas? If I capture a session using
etherfind, any pointers to what I should look for?
