[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] POP, POP2 and PC/TCP

glen@aecom.yu.edu (Glen M. Marianko) (06/17/89)

We just installed a POP2 server on our Sun 3/60 OS4 server which came
with the Lifeline product for PC-NFS. It works great with PC-NFS, but
that's not really our preferred platform here.

We are using FTP Inc.'s PC/TCP package on our PCs, and NCSA
Telnet or SUMac/IP on our Macs. Now, Mac/IP comes with a
mailhandler (v1.0) that is supposed to work with POP, but it
isn't working with our Sun's POP2 server (says invalid login
name/password). Is POP2 not downward compatible with POP(1?)?
Is the latest release of Mac/IP POP2 compliant?

Also, is there a POP2 client for PC/TCP either from FTP or a
third party? Will NCSA support POP2 in a future release?

It is our impression that POP is a MUST for doing SMTP mail on a
standalone non-UN*X workstation. Sitting around waiting for mail
by manually running SMTPSRV is for hackers, not users. Other
than a few esoteric bugs and the non-pretty user interface, this
is the only technical thing standing in the way of our fully
endorsing the FTP PC/TCP product on our campus-wide ethernet.

Any information would be appreciated.

SU-Mac/IP's Mac/MH client works with a POP3 server, as defined by RFCs
1081 and 1082. Version 6.6 of MH for Unix contains a compatible POP
server. MH is available from archive sites like UUNET, or on tape
from UC Irvine.

(BTW, SU-PC/IP also has a POP3-compatible MH client.)
