[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] PD NetBIOS on TCP/IP wanted

rb@diab.se (Rune Br{nnstr|m) (07/07/89)

Netland citizens!

From where can I get a public domain source for a
RFC1001/2 compliant "NetBIOS on TCP/IP" implementation.

A source targeted for a Unix box is preferred, but
anything will go.

Please e-mail Your hints, comments, sources, etc.,
to me ASAP.

I don't know of any that are public-domain, or even non-commercial freeware.
NETBIOS is a rather dirty protocol to work with, and academic developers
are typically satisfied with Telnet, FTP and perhaps remote printing. Also,
if any other TCP/IP applications are to run while the NETBIOS is active on
a DOS machine, the TCP/IP has to be shareable by multiple different software
modules. None of the p-d developers have done this yet, so they would have
a *lot* of work in front of them.

For Unix, I know Syntax, in Redmond, WA, has a SMB file-server application
which is available using RFC 1001/1002 as the transport layer. Also, SCO's
Xenix-Net product can be configured to use RFC 1001/1002 transport from
a couple of vendors.

For DOS, you can get RFC 1001/1002 NETBIOSes from us (add-on to
PC/TCP), Excelan, Ungermann-Bass, CMC, 3Com (for the Bridge
68000-based smart card) and Interlan (I think they have one for their
NP600 smart board). Note that ours is the only one which runs host-based
on dumb cards (and we take up a good deal of memory doing so).
