When I wired my new house last year, I installed a transient suppressor on the circuit breaker box. I bought it at the same place I bought the other materials for wiring the house. It cost about $25. It has three leads: one to the ground bus, and two that connect to the main breaker along with the hot leads from the meter socket. I don't know if it will do anything, but we're at the top of a hill, so we may get some lightning nearby. I think I got the idea to use it from an old (1970s) Time/Life book on wiring. It's installed so that I can't see the model number or manufacturer's name; if you're interested, drop me a note and I'll get them.
