[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] What is netbios?

garvey@cmic.UUCP (Joe Garvey) (11/09/89)

I run the local unix machines & tcp-ip net. We've recently connected
some IBM-PC machines to the LAN. What exactly does netbios do for me?
There was a socket on the 3C503 boards for it. Apparently it was an
option. Right now we run rlogin, lpr, and ftp out of the PC to the
Unix system. We'd like to do more. I'm currently using software from
FTP Inc.

Do I need other applications to make it work on the network at the
same time someone is using the machine for something else? I'm thinking
of applications like file sharing (ftp into the PC while someone is
running 123 or NFS), and automatic printer redirection so a 123 user
printing to lpt2, ends up using the Unix system's remote printer daemon.

I'd prefer mail sent to me, and I'll summarize... if I get a few requests
for summaries.
