[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] SLIP under MSDOS

scott@memex.co.uk (Scott Williamson) (10/21/89)

Is there a public domain implementation of SLIP (Serial Line
Internet Protocol) for MSDOS? Which out of the following are
supported: nfs, rpc, rlogin, rsh, rcp, sockets, telnet, ftp?

As of this time, all three freeware TCP/IPs (KA9Q, NCSA and PC-IP) support
SLIP in some way. KA9Q and PC-IP both have direct SLIP drivers, and
NCSA can use the Clarkson SLIP8250 (as of the moment, PC-IP can't, I don't
know about KA9Q). All of these have Telnet, KA9Q and NCSA have FTP. None
of them have NFS, RPC, rlogin, rsh, rcp or sockets.

Both Sun's PC/NFS and our PC/TCP (both commercial packages) have NFS, rlogin,
rsh, rcp and sockets. As of this instant (because I haven't shipped the v2.04
Developer's Kit), only Sun has RPC (but we will by the end of the week). Both
packages support SLIP.

The version of KA9Q that I've been developing for the past year or
so has an internal socket interface for the applications. It's close
to, but not exactly the same as, BSD sockets. The differences are
mostly caused by the need to use a number space for socket
descriptors that is distinct from file descriptors; to do otherwise
would have required me to rewrite much of the Turbo-C stdio library,
which I considered "outside the scope of the project".

KA9Q supports SLIP under DOS.
It has telnet, ftp, ftpd, ping, telnetd (almost)
