[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] 3C501 and LIM 4.0 EMS problem

chris@bingvaxu.cc.binghamton.edu (Chris Peck) (11/21/89)

A simple question regarding 3COM's 3C501 etherne board. I've been using
this board in an XT286 (essentially a 6Mhz AT - "real IBM") for more than
a year now without any problems. I just started looking into an X server
for this system and have found one, now the fun starts... I figured I
would add some LIM 4.0 RAM to my AT (since X would use it) - I went out
and purchased a BocaRAM AT Plus w/2 Meg of RAM. When I boot the system
with 2 Meg allocated to LIM 4.0 expanded and the 3C501 (LIM 4.0 starts
at 0d000) the EMS driver does NOT see the RAM board - if I take the 3C501
out of the system then all is fine. It appears that the 3C501 is allocating
that address space (which is in the middle of the LIM 4 spec - you cannot
use LIM 4.0 without this address). I've called 3COM to no avail - Boca said
"yes - lots of network adapters use that space, just set your ethernet
adapter to a different address", well I can't - and nowhere in the 3C501
book does it mention address 0d000 - or anything about any memory addresses
being used by the board (except for the optional PROM which I don't have -
so it's disabled and the jumpers are set for EC00 anyways). Has anyone else
run into a similar problem - does anyone know of any ethernet boards that
allow you to "move" the address around?
-Thanks in advance (I hope)
 chris
