[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] NCSA 2.2D, 2.2tn with 3C523 and NIC/ps2 boards

HBN@unb.ca (12/21/89)

Good day,
We have been running NCSA Telnet 2.2 on a variety of PCs and PS/2s
for about 2 years without any problems. We recently obtained
NCSA 2.2D and 2.2tn (we need 3278 support). I have installed and
tested it on an IBM PC/AT and a Zenith clone both with wd8003e
boards. It works in both of these cases.

However, I have been unable to make it work on microchannel IBM
PS/2s with a 3Com 3C523 board - I've tested it on a model 55sx,
model 60 and a model 80. These three machines are currently used
extensively (without problems) with version 2.2. The symtoms with
version 2.2D and 2.2tn are as follows. The programs print the
'Reading configuration file...' message, then the normal NCSA
header message, then 'My Ethernet address: <whatever>', 'My
IP address: <whatever>', 'Trying to open TCP connection to <hostname>',
then I get the prompt 'Enter a new machine or address ...'. The session
that I tried to create is displayed at the bottom of the screen
with an asterisk (indicates that it is still trying to connect).
I never get a login prompt for the remote machine, regardless of
which machine I try.

In another department, we have an IBM PS/2 model 50 with two
network cards: an Ungermann Bass NICps2 and an IBM PC Network
(Broadband) card. We have run versions 2.2D and 2.2tn on the PC
Network card using the Packet Driver for the Token Ring card (the
PC Network card is compatible with the Token Ring card). However,
when it is configured for the Ungarmann Bass NICps2 card, it hangs
shortly after printing the 'Reading configuration file...' message.

Since it works with the wd8003e card and with the PC Network/
Token Ring Packet Driver combination it would seem that it is a
problem with the support for the other two Microchannel cards.
We have tried it with the old config.tel file that we had been
using and with the newer one supplied with version 2.2D/2.2tn.
Since the config.tel works with version 2.2, this seems to
eliminate the possibility of something being configured incorrectly
(i.e. the memory address set incorrectly etc). Also the FTP version
1.04D seems to work ok.

If anybody has used either of these boards with NCSA versions 2.2D
or 2.2tn, could you please tell me how you did it.

Thanks in advance,
