[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] HELP:KA9Q = SLIP?? : USE ON COM1/2??: WHERE IS THE DOC/SRC??

CCECHAN@NUSVM.BITNET (Luther Chan) (12/21/89)

Dear networker,

I read something on UNIX world about SLIP, serial line internet protocol,
it appears that the SLIP was implemented on PC serial port, further more
it also mention about KA9Q. But just this two days I receive PCIP mail
that said KA9Q is a TCP/IP on ethernet card. I wounder is SLIP on
ethernet card too? Is there anything like SLIP / KA9Q working on serial
port of IBMPC or compatible, such that one PC can be used as printer server,
all PC are connected in daisy chain manner(ie. each PC has two serial ports).
The speed of the serial port can go up to 9.6 Kbps.

Where can I get the documentation and source code of the KA9Q and SLIP?
How large are these programs? Is there any for MSDOS and SUN?
                                  Thanks in advance!sign

The KA9Q TCP/IP software package is able to handle SLIP between PCs and
between PCs and Unix boxes.

You seem to misunderstand. SLIP is Serial Line IP - so naturally it is designed
to work over serial lines. Why would you want it to work over an ethernet card?

I don't think you can connect a printer as an output for a SLIP connection
unless that printer uses TCP/IP protocols (as someone on the net has mentioned
being available).

You can get it via anonymous ftp from flash.bellcore.com. [128.36.92.20]
It is available as freeware for educational institutions and amateur packet
radio operators.
