[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Netware/TCP-IP/Token

We have several Novell Netware Systems, eventually about 8-10, all
running with IBM Token Ring hardware. We now have aquired a mini-
computer that will speak TCP/IP over Ethernet. Is there some good
Hardware and Software Available that will allow us to do FTP and
hosts sessions from our networked PC's?

For those PCs not on a TCP/IP ethernet network you have two options.

First, Wollongong provides IP over NetBIOS and IP over IPX drivers so that
any existing LAN workstation can be a full TCP/IP host by means of a PC-based
IP router. Connectivity to the file server can be provided by an FTP daemon
on the IP router.

Second, Interlan sells a TCP/IP gateway product which sits in the file server
and provides limited ARPA services to the workstations on that Novell network.

For PCs with 802.5 hardware that supports IBM's ASI interface (as most
do), several TCP/IPs can share the interface with Netware directly,
sending IP encapsulated according to RFC 1042 on the 802.5 net. These
include PC/TCP and IBM's TCP/IP for DOS (there are also a 'consulting
special' version of PC/NFS, and a Packet Driver which lets Ethernet
Packet Driver TCP/IPs use the ASI, but there is some potential for
conflicts between ARP and the RIF handling in the Packet Driver).

Of course, you need an IP router between the 802.5 and the Ethernet:
Proteon, IBM or cisco will sell you one, a Banyan VINES server or the
PCRoute freeware could do the job also.

How does PCRoute route from 802.5 to ethernet ??

   Chuck Warlick

My apologies; I was in a hurry replying to the message and asked someone
(whose memory proved to be faulty) rather than find and read the PCRoute
write-ups. As of the version I've seen, PCRoute only supported Ethernet,
SLIP and Appletalk. It could support 802.5, if someone chose to add it...
