For historical reason, 3+Mail (and later 3+Open Mail) runs over XNS transport rather then NetBios session. However, in 3+Open Lan Manager, XNS transport (XNSTP) can be loaded and unloaded dynamically (just like FTP Software's PC/TCP kernel). So one could still use 3+Open Mail even if DOS workstation is running NBP NetBios (3Com propietery) or RFC1002 NetBios. You would need to load XNS before running 3+Open Mail and unload it after that. I was told that 3Com is porting 3+Open Mail to run over NetBios session. Does anyone have any information on this? 3+Open Mail over NetBios COULD have many advantages: 1. protocol independent. 2. able to use Lan Manager's authentication rather than using 3+Names. (ei one common password rather than 2 passwords). 3. do not require a separate Mail Minder program for mail arrival notification. Lan Manager's NetPopUp can be used. ps: follow up to 3COM-L@NUSVM.BITNET since this has nothing much to do with pcip. Acknowledge-To: <CCECL@NUSVM>

Unfortunately, I've found Mail Minder to be much more dependable under DOS than NetPopUp. NetPopUp has a tendency to scramble the display controller inside certain applications. ============================================================================= Delbert Matlock Internet: dmatlock@eecs.cs.pdx.edu MicroNet Northwest UUCP: dmatlock@eecs.UUCP Voice: (503)228-3071
