I normally try to stay away from the MS-DOS systems at work * , but today the story emerged that the manager of a group that does development with a Novell network of PC's wants to be able to have access to files on our UNIX systems, which are already networked with TCP/IP and NFS. * NOTE: Simply because I am busy enough as it is managing the UNIX systems. I have extensive DOS experience (although not with Novell) from previous positions, so don't be afraid of getting technical in your responses. For a variety of reasons, I'd rather avoid having a Novell server on one of the UNIX machines, so this means I'd to: a) have one PC that is up and running Netware and PC-NFS at the same time, b) have a system like a) but configured to act as a gateway between the systems, c) have two systems (one running Novell, one PC-NFS) tied together with a serial connection acting as a gateway, or d) have one system that can either run PC-NFS or Netware and must be rebooted to change networks. Just from looking at the documentation that comes with the Standard Microsystems PC130E Arcnet card, Novell Netware, 3com 3c503 Ethernet card, and PC-NFS I am as certain as I can be at this time that both cards can be set up so as not to conflict with each other (e.g. different interrupt numbers, I/O base address, etc) while at the same time being able to interface with the controlling software. The system in question has no other add-on cards except for a video card and a serial port, so there's plenty of free slots and no other strange hardware to worry about. So it looks like option (d) above is feasible, but of course this is the least desirable option :-(. There's a chance option (a) would work, but I have the feeling that I have a better change of winning the state lottery or getting hit by a falling meteor :-). (But if anyone *has* done this, by all means let me know.) Option (b) is probably the most interesting. I'd guess that someone, somewhere, somehow has gatewayed Novell and TCP/IP, and this shouldn't be *that* an unusual thing to want to do. I could, of course, use approach (c) and `roll my own' gateway, but I'd like to hear about any commercial products to gateway the two networks (special PC software that can talk to both cards, without the cards' drivers stepping omn each others toes, a small, dedicated computer with a ROMed program that acts as s smart gateway, Novell Arcnet cards and software for UNIX). In case you recommend a solution on the UNIX end, our two main UNIX systems are an HP9000/370 (HP-UX) and a Solbourne 4/600 (sun4/SunOS 4.0 compatible). Please E-mail replies to me as I do not normally read this newsgroup. If I get enough `me toos,' I will summarize to the net in a few weeks. -- David Barts Pacer Corporation, Bothell, WA davidb@pacer.uucp ...!uunet!pilchuck!pacer!davidb

I've already been swamped with responses, so if you haven't replied, please don't. I have also been swamped with `me toos,' so I am going to post a summary of responses in several days. Thanks to all who replied. -- David Barts Pacer Corporation, Bothell, WA davidb@pacer.uucp ...!uunet!pilchuck!pacer!davidb
