Hallo, one of our departments needs some help in designing a LAN (Ethernet) for Mac's, Sun's, PC's and DecNet access. They don't want to use extra software on the SUN, but still have to buy the hard and software for the MACS and PC's. They thought on using the TOPS software, but that sounded to me like some specific solution for the MAC ( Sun doing Appletalk and acting as a router to all other machines). It also is quite expensive. Aren't there any solution on some standard protokol like TCP/IP. What hardware would be neccessary for the MACS and PC's. Is Appletalk still working ( Printer ). Are there Public-Domain solutions (at least for some basic functionality like FTP and Telnet) Every help is appreciated H.-J. B. ----------------------------------------------------------- Hans-J. Here you go. This is one of many solutions to your problem. Get the Cayman GatorBox to start with. This allows you to use the Sun's NFS as a AppleShare sever. The GatorBox does NFS to AppleShare in the box. This gets you basic file sharing. Also you can get PC-NFS from Sun for allowing NFS on your PC's or purchase similar software from companies like FTP Software (you will most likely get faster tech support turn around from FTP than from Sun, just a personal opinion). Now for telnet, FTP, etc here are a couple of suggestions for the MACINTOSH: PD telnet Packages (not exhaustive) NCSA telnet (FTP, telnet (Vt102, tek 4014)) Other flavors of this package contain SLIP, TN3270 support, client/server FTP. Stanfords MacIP (telnet (vt100), FTP) They also have a mail package. Several HyperCard implementations of everything from NNTP to FTP and telnet. TOPS Terminal (out in the PD now, telnet (vt100 ?), FTP) (Did I forget anyone?) Commercial Packages for telnet/FTP/etc. Ungermann Bass's UWS (telnet (vt100), FTP) (Still waiting for my copy :-)) Novell's HostAccess (telnet (vt100), FTP) (The two above are take offs of Stanfords PD product) Wollongong's MacPathWayAccess (a mouthfull) (telnet (vt241,tek4014,IBM 3278), FTP Client/Server, Finger) (A take off of NCSA telnet) InterCon Systems TCP/Connect II (telnet (vt241, tek4014, IBM 3278), FTP Client/Server, Finger, SNMP agent, NNTP reader, SMTP/POP, SLIP, etc.) (A totally different product from the original TCP/Connect which had its roots in NCSA telnet) Now for mail you can use one of the above packages (the ones that support SMTP or POP) or you can get the following: Cayman sells addons for MS-Mail and QuickMail that allow them to communicate with the rest of the world via SMTP. This might do the trick for you, or you can get one of the integrated packages mentioned above. There is also a PD package from Lund University in Sweden that allows SMTP/POP traffic over your applenet. Now for telnet, FTP, etc here are a couple of suggestions for the PC: PD packages for telnet and FTP on the PC. NCSA telnet for the PC pretty much the same specs as the Mac version. Stanfords package (I cannot remember the name of) CMU has a PC package University of Maryland has a PC package MIT's PC/TCP (I am sure that I am missing at least one) Commercial Packages for telnet and FTP on the PC. For your PC's I would suggest taking a look at FTP Softwares package for the PC. It comes with pretty much everything that you would need, in addition if you get their NFS you only need to deal with one vendor on the PC side of things. Other companies that offer PC TCP/IP support are SUN, Wollongong, InterCon Systems and Ungermann Bass. (there are probably others, but they elude me at the moment.) PLEASE feel free to add to this list. I did my best to cover everyone that I knew about.-- InterCon Systems Corporation 703.709.9890 703.709.9896 FAX
