I have a 20MHz 386 running DOS 4.01 fitted with a 3C501 card. Using Sun's PC-NFS produces the results I expect; however, when I try to use any code using the packet driver (V6), the machine randomly hangs. I've tried different ethernet cards (ne1000), but again packet driver software hangs. Any ideas? Is it worthwhile reformatting my hard disk and using Dos 3.3? Thanks, Aidan Loyns

Hold the reformatting of your hard disk for a moment. I believe the problem is more likely to be with the packet driver interface for pcnfs. At least I and a number of others have discovered that this fall apart when you try to run PCNFS on top of V6 PACKET DRIVERS. My experience was with the wd8003e v6.5 packet driver. Have reverted to an earlier release of the packet drivers when using PCNFS things are know working very nicely. The problem has been reported. But as with anything thats free. It's quite hard to hassle someone into investigating the problem. Perhaps you might like to have a go. >Thanks. All of a sudden people on my network started having their PCs lock up when they left for a while. All of the people were using Version 6 of the packet drivers to access Netware286 or Netware 386 and running DOS 4.01 (NI5210 and NE1000 cards). The only things I remember happening around that time was a couple of weeks before a server was upgraded to 386 and we upgraded to V6 packet drivers. Downgrading the packet drivers fixed most people's problems. I happen to be the most noticeable exception. I've tried different versions of the NI5210 packet driver from V2 to V6 and taking out all of my TSRs. It still locks up sometimes. The problem is intermittant though (My PC was on for the last 3 days while I was gone and it was still going strong today). ================================================================================ Billy Barron Bitnet : BILLY@UNTVAX VAX system manager THENET : NTVAX::BILLY University of North Texas Internet : billy@vaxb.acs.unt.edu SPAN : UTSPAN::UTADNX::NTVAX::BILLY ================================================================================

I have tried the same PS/2 70 + 3C523 + DOS 4.01 + Packed Driver (Clarkson) and it didn't work. Ilan

I had the same problem, after 3 - 5 minutes the machine hung. With WD8003 cards every- thing works. I believe that, although I have no problems running Novell IPX with NE1000 cards and packet driver, the NE1000 driver is somehow buggy. Sometimes changing the shared memory address on the card helps, sometimes not. If anyone has a definitive fix, I'd be most grateful. This is happening under DOS 3.3, haven't tried 4.x yet. Since PCs are single tasking, I find the fact that this usually occurs only after being idle for a while really odd. Ted Nolan ted@usasoc.soc.mil

I drive 1GB through them as part of an acceptance test. Thus far only the Clarkson 3.1 NI5210 driver has passed. All subsequent revisions have crashed. I have not tested the 6.x revision yet. I am using DOS 3.3 and have not determined whether the crash is caused by the packet driver or some interaction between DOS's stack(s) and the rate that interrupts occur. (DOS's message about stack overflow does not appear when the system crashes.) But thus far I have stayed with the Clarkson 3.1 revision and have been happy.
