[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Problem with 3c503 and Zenith 386sx

tksjmi@sybil.cs.Buffalo.EDU (JoAnn Illuzzi) (07/23/90)

We are trying to install a 3c503 in a Zenith 386sx machine. There are no
other boards in the bus other than color video. When trying to run the
 503 diagnostics, we get a
NOT FOUND AT ANY I/O ADDRESS
I tried using ver 2.0 of the 503 driver, the driver loaded but pdstat
 gives an ethernet address of
     FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF
has anyone encountered this before? Is the problem the 386SX cpu itself?

Can anyone tell me if this is one of those eisa bus machines? Or is
 it an AT bus?

 input appreciated

JoAnn,

I too had problems with Zenith 386sx machines and the 3c503 cards.
However, the 3c505 cards work just fine.

The Zenith 386sx is an AT bus machine. There are two problems that
I know of with the older motherboards (the new ones supposedly have
these problems corrected):

The DMA controller for the disk controller (Western Digital
OEM) was not up to spec. This caused problems when I would
	try to run FASTBACK.

One of the signals on the AT bus is not implemented correctly.
	I can't remember the details, but I think the 3c503 sees a
signal on the bus that should not be there - it then tries to
respond to the signal, but since it was a false signal the
	3c503 just hangs.

Zenith now has a revision to fix these problems (and maybe others that
I am not aware of). Just call up your Zenith rep. I can't verify if
the motherboard revisions work since I haven't scheduled the repairs yet.
