[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Netwatch over packet drivers using NI5010 card

XBR2D96D@DDATHD21.BITNET (Knobi der Rechnerschrat) (08/03/90)

Hello,

I'm still trying to get the 9.6 Netwatch/PD to work using the
packet drivers. The problem is, that with the NI5010, NETWATCH only
sees broadcast packets. In fact when I start it, it shows the first
packet that comes (that may be of any type) and then only shows
broadcasts (the counters say "pckts: n+1 brdcst: n"). What can cause
this behaviour? Somebody said the NI5010 does not support promiscous
mode, but on the other hand NETWATCH using the "plain" NI5010 interface
works great. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance....

Even if the card itself supports promiscuous mode, it is possible that
the packet driver was not written to take advantage of this.
Supporting promiscuous mode depends on extended functionality -
implementing desirable, but not required, functions. We have just
released a version of LANWatch that runs over packet drivers, and it
took considerable time to establish a reasonable collection of packet
drivers that implemented promiscuous mode. I expect that you will be
seeing more of them in the future!
