[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] PC lpd print server

terry@iti.org (Terry Hull) (08/10/90)

I just retrieved the lpd stuff from tacky.cs.olemiss.edu and found the
utilities were severely broken when using the WD8003 Ethernet boards.
When I try to print a file from a Sun running PLP, lpd on the PC
recognizes the connection, but the Sun is never able to complete
sending the file. LPD also puts random garbage characters up on the
screen as it receives the file. Also, it will not work at all unless
I run NCSA telnet first.

Has anyone used this lpd before with the WD8003 drivers? Any
suggestions? Alternatively, I would like to have a program that would
take data from the the lpr socket and print it on the printer with no
spooling being done on the PC. The UNIX machines would then be
responsible for the spooling operations. My intent is to put a
LaserJet II with HP's JetScript and an Ethernet card installed
so the entire net will have access to a reasonably fast PostScript
printer.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Would you be interested in a commercial implementation? We have an LPD
for PCs, which runs over the WD8003. Alternately, you could get the
Berkeley LPD for your UNIX machines.

I've hacked up a lpd server for clarkson's tn3270 for the pc. We use
it to print from our Unix machines to our Novell connected printers
including Novell print queues that point to apple laserwriters. If you
are interested I can make it ftpable.

We also use it so our users can issue and lpr from thier telnet session
to a local printer.
