[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Looking for PD tcp/ip/ftp/telnet/etc

jburnes@crash.cts.com (Jim Burnes) (09/11/90)

Hi All!

I'm looking for high quality PD TCP/IP software FTP/TELNET and berkeley
sockets stuff for both Xenix/386 and MSDOS machines. If this sounds
somewhat ingorant ..then so be it. What are the names of these
programs and where can they be found (what machines). I have
pc pursuit and shell access to a usenet unix box.

I would also like to get access to sources if possible.

Any help appreciated.

The best PD TCP/IP SW package for MS DOS is probably NCSA Telnet, if what
you need is a user friendly Telnet & FTP. But, there is no socket
library that I know of for this TCP, yet...
NCSA Telnet is available from zaphod.ncsa.uiuc.edu

If you MUST have a socket library interface, Phil Karn's KA9Q, originally
written for packet radio only, but now with Ethernet support for most
cards (nonintellegent ones), will be a good choice.
According to my FTP list, KA9Q is available from flash.bellcore.com,
ucsd.edu, vax.cs.pitt.edu and terminator.cc.umich.edu.

For SCO XENIX 2.3.2 (I assume this is the XENIX OS you're referring to)
I have only come across one PD TCP/IP - the XENIX port of KA9Q. It's
implemented outside the kernel and is neither very fast, nor fully
integrated with the rest of the UNIX world, but it works. There is
a port underway of the original BSD TCP/IP code (which is now freely
available) for the good old 3B2, at least thats what I've heard. Since
3B2 is standard AT&T SysV, a port from 3B2 to SCO XENIX should a
managable job for the average hacker. You can probably find out
more about this port in comp.protocols.tcp-ip and comp.archives.

I've looked at the KA9Q port for XENIX, and found that it leaves a lot
to be desired, but I do not have the time nor the initiative to do
something about it, at least not this year.

If you find out more about PD TCP/IP's for XENIX, drop me a line.
