Just like to share some new test results with the net: Release 1.05 of the NDIS-Packet converter from FTP software (dated August 1st, 1990) and the latest beta test release 2.3b10 from NCSA now work together. This applies to the NCSA programs themselves (telnet and ftp) and also to the included lpr/lpq package. NCSA can now also use RARP with packet drivers. PCPOP, another package which uses the NCSA TCPIP code, does not yet seem to use the b10 code, although NCSA b10 is included in their latest package. But both solved problems are still in their program. I also observed the problem with a NDIS driver echoing back ARP broadcasts to the sender, but only with the Western Digital NDIS driver. Several 3COM drivers don't show that behaviour. Btw, when I recently looked into FTP Software's ftp-archive at vax.ftp.com, I found the NDIS-packet driver in pub/packet.driver.old, and not in pub/packet.driver. The latter directory contained only the latest packet driver collection v7 from Clarkson university. Bug or feature ... :-) ? Thanks for the test report - I'm glad to hear NCSA fixed things. I also observed the problem with a NDIS driver echoing back ARP broadcasts to the sender, but only with the Western Digital NDIS driver. Several 3COM drivers don't show that behaviour. The InterLan NI5210 NDIS driver I use echoes broadcasts. As I understand the NDIS spec, drivers are required to echo both broadcasts and multicasts, so it wouyld appear to be a bug in the 3Com drivers. Btw, when I recently looked into FTP Software's ftp-archive at vax.ftp.com, I found the NDIS-packet driver in pub/packet.driver.old, and not in pub/packet.driver. This was a temporary condition. It is fixed now. James B. VanBokkelen 26 Princess St., Wakefield, MA 01880 FTP Software Inc. voice: (617) 246-0900 fax: (617) 246-0901

While we're on this subject... Does the latest version of the NDIS-Packet converter run under Windows 3.0? Thanks. - John (fratus@niaid.nih.gov)

Does the latest version of NDIS-Packet converter run under Windows 3.0? I haven't tried it. It doesn't include any code that attempts to deal with Windows-isms like moving the program that issued the access_type(). If Windows does this, the machine will crash. James B.
