We are begining to use PCS/TCP, a package designed for a 3Com network, and wanting to use TN3270. Line mode on an IBM VM/CMS system is fun, but... Has anyone *actually* combined any of the various TN3270 packages and this telnet? Perhaps more properly stated, has someone used a TN3270 and the driver and etc. from this package. It does not have a TN3270 of it's own. If so, I'd like to know and if wanted I'll post any results. -Marshall Academic Data Center, User Specialist/Communications Manager School of Hygiene and Public Health, Johns Hopkins University 615 North Wolfe Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21205-2179 Date: 10 January 89, 20:00:42 EST From: Marshall Albert Bryan (301) 955-3445 MARSHALL at JHUHYG To: TN3270-L IBM 3270 Emulation Discussion List TN3270 at TERMINUS.UMD.EDU IBM PC Networking Discussion List IBM-NETS at UGA ARPA TCP-IP Discussion List TCP-IP at SRI-NIC.ARPA PC-IP Arpa Discussion List PCIP at UDEL.EDU IBM TCP/IP for VM Discussion List IBMTCP-L at CUNYVM Re: 3com PCS/TCP-NS and TN3270 Sorry for the multiple posting. What about SMTP <>3Com? I am aware of the Sun 386 Promulgate Mail Gateway, but the $30,000 or so needed is a bit much for no FAX or Novell connectivity. I would pay that for those something that did all three. As far as additional Mail package interfaces, WordPerfect Office would be nice... But then as you can tell I'm a dreamer. I guess what I would like is a Communications Server that did just that... Thanks for any input if you've got it. -Marshall Academic Data Center, User Specialist/Communications Manager School of Hygiene and Public Health, Johns Hopkins University 615 North Wolfe Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21205-2179 FAX (301) 955-1752

Both vendors just gave us a few Ethernet/10Base-T cards to try, but we were told we would have to acquire our own drivers if we wanted to play with TCP/IP. Are there Clarkson drivers for these cards? Are they supported by FTP Software's PC/IP? Has anyone had experience with the cards? Any information will be appreciated. Cabletron has their own packet driver for their cards. I don't know about
David Systems. If their board is compatible with Novell's, then either the
NE1000 or NE2000 drivers should work. Otherwise you're out of luck.

Date: Wed, 08 Aug 90 07:58:01 MST From: Lou Arminio <UCC2LAA@NAUVM> Subject: RE: Drivers for Cabletron Cards To: PCIP <pcip@udel.edu> My apologies for making Cabletron look bad regarding drivers. The truth is, we haven't received our cards from them yet, so I didn't know for sure that I wouldn't have them. We do have the David Systems cards in though, and the Western Region Representative told us we would need to acquire our own TCP/IP drivers for these. I didn't want to wait until the Cabletron cards came in to find out whether we would need drivers for these too, so I inquired about both cards. BTW: All our preliminary dealings with Cabletron have shown the company to be very responsive to our needs. It looks like I got the answer I needed on the Cabletron cards. Now how about those David System cards? Thanks for all your responses. Any information I have tried Cabletron's cards and they worked just fine for me (packet drivers and all). My concern with these is that the source code is not available for their driver which means that the folks at Clarkson and elsewhere cannot add new features as needed (e.g. Windows 3.0 support, support for Blue Book and 802.3 packets, etc.) DAVID Systems has told me that they will have a driver soon. I talked with our sales rep and mentioned that they could probably get one written for the cost of a couple cards (sent to Clarkson's Russ Nelson). They were *real* receptive to this and I would expect Russ to be hearing from them soon (hope that's OK with you Russ!!) regards, Allen Robel robel2@mythos.ucs.indiana.edu University Computing Services ROBELR@IUJADE.BITNET Network Research & Planning voice: (812)855-7171 Indiana University FAX: (812)855-8299

They have chosen to roll their own packet drivers. On the other hand,
their packet drivers are supported, whereas the Clarkson collection of
drivers are unsupported.

Yes, that's OK with me. In fact, please tell *every* manufacturer of
Ethernet cards that they can get a driver written "just" by donating
the hardware to Clarkson (and get a tax write-off, too).
If packet drivers are important to you, then you need to let the hardware
manufacturers know about them. Many are totally ignorant about them.

My impression was that Cabletron was supporting their packet drivers themselves, and would upgrade their packet drivers themsleves.
